Rep. Spencer Igo Celebrates Passage of Bipartisan Housing Bill SF2298, Now Awaiting Governor's Signature

St. Paul, MN — Representative Spencer Igo (R–Wabana Township) proudly announced the passage of Senate File 2298, Minnesota's comprehensive Housing Omnibus Bill. The legislation, co-authored by Rep. Igo and Sen. Lindsey Port (DFL–Burnsville), has successfully passed both the House and Senate and now awaits Governor Tim Walz's signature.

“At the end of the day, everything starts with a home,” said Rep. Igo. “Housing is the foundation of strong families and strong communities.”

SF2298 is centered around three critical pillars that Rep. Igo says must guide Minnesota’s housing future: affordability, diversity, and stability.

“Affordability means people at all income levels can find a place to live. Diversity means we’re building the right kinds of housing—single-family homes, apartments, senior housing, workforce housing—so our communities reflect all who live there. Combine affordability and diversity and you get stability which means creating the long-term conditions that keep families secure and housed,” Rep. Igo explained.

“From day one, I said this bill needed to be about real people, real communities, and real solutions—and today, we delivered on that promise,” he continued.

SF2298 represents significant investments in Minnesota's housing sectors, with key provisions including:

  • Expanded Affordability in Housing Access - Increased funding for affordable housing programs to assist families state-wide.
  • Support for Diversity in Types of Housing Infrastructure Projects - Targeted grants to develop and maintain essential housing infrastructure in underserved areas and increase diversity of housing supply.
  • Stability for Minnesotan Families - Continued support of programming that is that to educate, support, and help people in all stages of homeownership.

While the bill is a major step forward, Rep. Igo also emphasized that more work lies ahead—especially on the issue of land use and zoning.

“This bill moves the needle, but if we’re serious about solving the housing shortage in Minnesota, we can’t ignore the barriers in our zoning laws,” Rep. Igo said. “Land use reform wasn’t part of SF2298, but it absolutely needs to be part of the next conversation. We have to ensure our communities can actually build more homes to address the over 100,000 housing unit shortage.”

He concluded by underscoring the bipartisan spirit behind the bill’s success. “This legislation is the result of months of honest conversation, compromise, and collaboration. It proves that when we focus on people, not politics, we can make meaningful change.”

With the Governor’s signature expected soon, Rep. Igo expressed confidence that the bill will bring new momentum to solving Minnesota’s housing crisis and building stronger, more inclusive communities across the state.
