St. Paul, MN — Representative Spencer Igo released the following statement in response to news that President Donald Trump is expected to sign executive orders boosting nuclear energy development by invoking the Defense Production Act:
“President Trump is 100% correct for taking decisive action to advance nuclear power in the United States. This is a smart, strategic move toward American energy independence. Reducing our reliance on Russia and China for nuclear technology is long overdue, and this executive order is a strong first step.”
The orders are expected to streamline approvals for new reactors and prioritize domestic nuclear development as a matter of national security. Nuclear energy is a clean, reliable, zero-emission power source that must be part of any serious long-term energy strategy. Nuclear energy also brings with it the added benefit of supporting communities with tax base and with some of the highest paid jobs in the energy industry.
“Minnesota, especially the Iron Range, stands to benefit from this renewed focus on nuclear power,” Igo said. “Whether it is through mining critical minerals or supporting next-generation energy infrastructure, our region is well positioned to lead. Nuclear is the key to an affordable, reliable, and safe energy grid. I fully support this direction and will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen our energy future. I look forward to continuing the work I have been leading on lifting the nuclear energy moratorium in Minnesota by collaborating with our Legislature, Governor, Communities, and People.”
