Reps. Frazier and Freiberg statement on Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade

SAINT PAUL, Minn - Reps. Mike Freiberg (DFL - Golden Valley) and Cedrick Frazier (DFL - New Hope) issued the following joint statement regarding today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling which struck down constitutional protection of abortion rights under Roe v. Wade:

“Extreme laws that curtail abortion rights don’t just threaten the health of those who are or could become pregnant, they threaten the overall quality of health care we deeply value in this state.” said Rep. Mike Freiberg, Chair of the Preventive Health Division. “They will exacerbate unacceptable health disparities. It is unethical and immoral to require pregnant women to give birth, in a healthcare system where we cannot guarantee the health of the mother. It is reprehensible that six unelected conservative justices have overturned what is settled law.”

“The stripping of our reproductive rights will hurt communities of color the most.” said Rep. Cedrick Frazier, Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee. “You think that it’s just about abortion. ‘Maybe it’s just about that last trimester.’ But then you hear about how the same ‘pro-life’ lawmakers are against birth control. That they’re against educating the public about birth control, about their own bodies, about consent. This is clearly not about life, that gets threatened by guns in schools or struggles to eat when minimum wage isn’t enough to get above the poverty line. No, this is about control.”
