Rep. Cedrick Frazier opposes Unconstitutional Federalization of National Guard

Thursday, June 12, 2025

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Rep. Cedrick Frazier today condemned President Trump's sweeping federalization of state National Guard units in Los Angeles, California, calling the deployment an unprecedented and unconstitutional expansion of executive power that threatens both state sovereignty and constitutional rights.

The president's recent memorandum federalizing National Guard units extends far beyond any specific geographic region or emergency, instead asserting unlimited presidential authority to deploy any state's National Guard for a 60-day period. This broad claim of executive power lacks legal justification and sets a dangerous precedent for federal overreach.

“President Trump’s reckless decision to federalize the National Guard represents an alarming abuse of power that strikes at the heart of our constitutional democracy,” said Rep. Cedrick Frazier. “He is deploying military force against Americans who are standing up for their immigrant neighbors—families who are being torn apart, with children forced to navigate courtrooms alone. These are the same people who kept our communities running and our tables full during the pandemic, yet this administration continues to vilify them. This isn’t about public safety—it’s about a president who sees himself above the law and aspires to rule rather than serve.”

“The National Guard is not his personal militia to intimidate and target our communities. These are citizen-soldiers committed to serving their neighbors—not pawns in a president’s authoritarian playbook. We will not sit silently as this dangerous precedent is set. Our Constitution demands accountability, and the American people deserve leadership, not tyranny.”
