Legislative Update: October 24, 2025
Dear Neighbors –
It’s finally fall and I’m enjoying walking Barkley around our beautiful district as the leaves change color and greens give way to yellows, oranges, and reds.
Last weekend, I joined more than 100,000 of our neighbors at the No Kings Rally in Minneapolis, and it was a beautiful day to stand up for Government By The People. There were thousands more in every corner of our state - including right here at Lake Nokomis - all showing up to fight to defend inclusive democracy against the autocrats and oligarchs who are lining their pockets while the rest of us continue to struggle with Trump’s chaos, corruption, and cruelty.
Whether in the streets, in our community, or at the State Capitol, I’ve been continuing the fight to unrig our democracy and unrig our economy. That fight is only made stronger when all of us stand up together.
I was also glad to attend the South Minneapolis Seniors Fair alongside Attorney General Keith Ellison, Council Members Aurin Chowdhury, Emily Koski, and Andrea Jenkins, and Representative Samantha Sencer Mura this week at Diamond Lake Church. I appreciated the opportunity to share the work we’re doing at the state legislature to support seniors, and hear your concerns going into the next legislative session.
Recap of Community Conversation to End Gun Violence
Earlier this month, the power and unity of our South Minneapolis community was on full display as Rep. Samantha Sencer Mura, Sen. Zaynab Mohamed, and I hosted a community conversation about how we can move our feet to get weapons of war off our streets in the aftermath of the Annunciation Church and School shooting.
We heard powerful stories from Annunciation parents who have gone through unimaginable grief and trauma, and from the doctors who cared for our neighbors. If you couldn’t make it, I’d encourage you to watch this clip of Dr. Rachel Payne, a trauma specialist who lives in our district and treated multiple gunshot wounds on her 27 hour shift that day. Her story shows the incredible danger of these high-powered weapons, and why we must take action to ban assault weapons.
DFLers were ready to come to a special session to pass common-sense gun safety measures, like a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, closing loopholes in our gun laws, increasing funding for Red Flag Laws and public safety, and addressing mental health and school safety. However, my Republican colleagues have refused to even start a conversation that included meaningful gun safety legislation even amidst our community and the families of victims calling out for action. It’s time to listen to what people around the state are telling us -- keep these weapons of war off our streets.
I’m ready to continue this fight, with all of you, for the long haul. Whether during a special session or in next year’s regular session, I’ll continue working with our community to ensure we don’t let tragedies like what our district has been through go ignored by GOP elected officials. We must continue to speak up and take action.
Fighting Back During Trump’s Shutdown
We are now 24 days into the Republican Shutdown in Washington D.C., and while many Minnesotans already know about the chaos in Washington and the damage that Trump and his MAGA allies are doing, I want to share some details on how Trump’s shutdown is harming our neighbors.
But first, let’s remember how we got here. The Republican trifecta in Washington controls all three branches of the government, and at every turn, Trump has used unconstitutional, authoritarian methods to take even more power away from the people. But, in order to fund the government, they just need to do one thing–extend the Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies that they cut in their terrible bill earlier this year.
With these cuts to Medicaid and ACA subsidies, 90,000 Minnesotans are set up to pay $180 more a month in healthcare premiums - many can’t afford that. That will harm working Minnesotans across our state, and it will also lead to higher costs for all residents as those Minnesotans who were previously covered will be forced into costly emergency room visits.
Republicans in D.C., including GOP House Whip Tom Emmer and our other four Republican representatives, care about billionaires more than the average American. They’ve lined the pockets of their billionaire donors with huge tax cuts, while cutting healthcare funding for millions of Americans. Our democratic systems have been co-opted by the wealthy elite, at the expense of the general public and the public systems that support them.
The American people deserve a better deal. That’s why I joined community leaders at a press conference at the MSP Airport, where TSA agents and air traffic controllers are going without pay, to demand that Republicans take action to end this shutdown and protect health care.
Our federal workers are struggling due to the cruelty of Trump’s shutdown, but all Minnesotans are being affected by this shutdown. Programs that help Minnesotans’ afford their energy bills are going without funding, national parks services at Voyageurs are being curtailed, farmers who were already struggling with Trump’s tariffs are losing support from USDA, and starting November 1, food benefits like SNAP and the Minnesota Family Investment Program will go without funding. The state has resources available to help those who may be impacted, which you can find here.
There’s never been a more important time to stand up and tell Trump and his MAGA allies that enough is enough, and demand they take action. I’m proud of our U.S. Senators and DFL Representatives for standing strong in D.C., and I’m leading efforts here at the Minnesota House on how we respond to this shutdown and protect workers and families.
If you want to share how this shutdown is affecting you, or need help navigating the shutdown’s impacts, please reach out to my office and we will do our best to connect you with available resources. In this time of unprecedented upheaval, I’m dedicated to supporting our neighbors in any way I can.
