Representative Athena Hollins Votes For, House Passes the PRO Act, Protecting Minnesotans’ Reproductive Freedom

Monday, January 23, 2023

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - On January 19, 2023, the Minnesota House passed the Protecting Reproductive Options (PRO) Act with a final vote of 69-65. The bill enshrines Minnesotans’ fundamental right to reproductive healthcare. Representative Athena Hollins (DFL- Saint Paul) voted for the legislation.

“I am taking a stand to end the generational trauma and oppression associated with bodily autonomy,” said Representative Hollins. “All of our children and loved ones deserve the right to make their own decisions on their reproductive healthcare needs. Our kids should have the same rights that their grandmas did when Roe v. Wade was passed on January 22, 1973. We cannot go backward in history.”

The bill protects Minnesotans’ right to contraception, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, and the right to abortion, and ensures the right to privacy for personal reproductive health decisions. It also prevents interference by anti-choice politicians who seek to enact or defend medically unnecessary barriers to comprehensive reproductive health care. The Senate will act on the bill next, and Gov. Walz has signaled he will sign the legislation into law.
