Legislative Update – March 11, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

The legislative session is in full swing as we continue making progress on legislation that builds upon our historic progress in 2023 and ensures Minnesota is a state that works for everyone. Here’s an update from the Capitol:

Hanson

I was so thrilled to speak at a rally in support of our social workers put on by the Minnesota chapter of NASW, the National Association of Social Workers! We had a fantastic crowd, and I am working with legislators on several important bills to support social workers as they provide critical services to Minnesotans in need. I also attended an event with fellow Metro State alumni and had a great time connecting with students and sharing my post-secondary education story.

2024 Legislative Session Survey

Getting feedback and input from our community is the most important part of my work as your representative. That’s why I’m asking if you could spare a few minutes to fill out our district’s 2024 survey. Your responses will help me better understand your viewpoints, concerns, and values. Let's make our voices heard!

I also want to take a second to remind you to follow my Official State Representative Facebook page, where I share updates on legislation, events, and programs that are available for Minnesotans.

2023 Tax Bill Programs

Last session, I was proud to author legislation expanding the state exemption on Social Security taxes to cover three-fourths of seniors in our state. Supporting our seniors and ensuring we have a fairer tax system is a priority I heard about from many in our community and I’m glad to report that provision is now in effect!

Now that tax season is upon us, I wanted to share some information about various programs you may be eligible for this year, including the Child Tax CreditProperty Tax RefundSocial Security Income Exemption, and the K-12 Credit and Subtraction.

Debt Fairness Act

Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the country. That’s why DFLers have introduced the Debt Fairness Act.

Too many people are saddled with unmanageable debt, and our current laws have been insufficient at addressing this dilemma. Medical debt depletes peoples’ rainy-day funds, causes them to incur credit card debt, and to forgo medical treatment altogether. The Debt Fairness Act aims to unburden Minnesotans from medical debt, and help working, and middle-class families make ends meet.

House Approves 101 Environmental Projects

Minnesotans take pride in our legacy of environmental stewardship. That’s why DFLers passed legislation to fund 101 projects across our state that protect our wildlife, water, air, and soil.

The funding, which comes from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, uses a portion of our state lottery proceeds to ensure our environment and natural resources are protected for generations to come.
