Legislative Update

1

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This session was a perfect reminder of why I ran for office in the first place.

It wasn’t for the politics. It wasn’t for the spotlight. It was for the people.

For the families working hard to build a better life. For the local law enforcement officers putting their lives on the line. For the small business owners just trying to stay afloat.

For our senior citizens—who’ve spent a lifetime building up our communities and deserve to stay in their homes without being forced out by rising tax costs.

And for the next generation of Minnesotans, who deserve a safer, more affordable future.

That’s who I’m fighting for—every single day.

And while this session didn’t go the way any of us hoped—especially with the delays that have now pushed us into a special session—I’m more committed than ever to delivering the kind of leadership that listens, acts, and stands firm on principle.

As Co-Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee, I’ve made it my mission to support the brave men and women who keep our communities safe. That means giving law enforcement the tools they need—not tying their hands with red tape and unrealistic policies. I’ve stood up against proposals that weaken accountability and endanger our first responders, because safety isn’t a partisan issue—it’s a human one.

And as a member of the Taxes Committee, I’ve fought hard to protect your paycheck and push back against the flood of unfunded mandates aimed at local governments. I’ve seen what happens when the state passes the buck—it’s local communities, like ours, left picking up the pieces. That’s not fair. And it’s not right. That’s why I’ve stood firm against proposals that would raise taxes on Minnesota families. In the face of rising costs, the last thing hardworking Minnesotans need is more taken out of their wallets by state government.

Let’s be honest: we didn’t need to end up here. The 23-day delay from my House DFL colleagues at the start of session set us back—and now, Minnesotans are being asked to pay for lost time. I’m disappointed. You deserve better.

But I’m not giving up. Not for one second.

Heading into this special session, I’m showing up—just like I always have—with a full heart and a clear purpose:

To fight for safer streets and neighborhoods

To stand shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement

To demand a tax system that’s fair, transparent, and respects your hard-earned dollars

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from you—my neighbors, my friends—it’s that Minnesotans are tough. We don’t back down. We don’t give up. And neither will I.

Thank you for believing in me, for reaching out, for holding me accountable, and for standing with me through every twist and turn of this session. It is the honor of a lifetime to serve you.

Let’s finish this strong—and let’s do it the Minnesota way: with grit, with grace, and with heart.

Supporting Minnesota’s Teachers — In and Beyond the Classroom

1

House Republicans are stepping up for Minnesota’s educators—because saying “thank you” should never come with a retirement penalty.

Almost every teacher I talk to asks the same question: When will the legislature finally fix our pensions? Minnesota’s teacher pensions just don’t measure up to what our neighbors offer—and it’s making a real difference.

Burnout is skyrocketing. Too many incredible educators are leaving the profession, worn out and feeling undervalued. That’s heartbreaking—and it’s something our communities, our kids, and our teachers cannot afford.

I hear your frustration loud and clear. You’ve waited long enough for real action. And honestly? Last session, when Democrats controlled everything and had an $18 billion budget surplus, they didn’t step up. Instead, they raised taxes by over $10 billion and grew government by 40%. But teacher pensions? They did nothing.

If not then, when will they?

House Republicans heard you. We talked to teachers from every corner of Minnesota, learned what matters most, and put together practical, common-sense reforms you deserve:

  • House File 2318 lets teachers retire at 62 with 30 years of service—and keep their full pension.
  • House File 2329 expands early retirement options to age 60 with 30 years of service, giving you a better, fairer benefit even if it’s reduced.

We even offered to free up $111 million by tightening eligibility for free lunch to families earning over $150,000—money that could have shored up teacher pensions. But the union pushed back hard against that idea, blocking a real chance to help.

Still, we kept fighting—and on the last day of session, we made progress. Teachers can now retire at 60 without the severe benefit cuts that used to punish those who dedicated their careers to Minnesota’s kids. It’s not perfect, but it’s a huge step forward.

And to ease the strain on local schools, we’re investing $40 million every two years to help cover pension costs—so districts don’t have to choose between funding pensions and funding classrooms.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about dollars and cents. It’s about respect. It’s about valuing the incredible work teachers do every day. It’s about making sure Minnesota is a place where the best educators want to build a career—and stay for the long haul.

Because every student deserves a great teacher who feels supported—not just while they’re teaching, but when it’s time to retire with dignity.

You shape our future. We’re committed to making sure yours is a little brighter, too.

Wishing You a Meaningful Memorial Day

Memorial Day

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I want to take a moment to honor the brave men and women who gave everything to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Their courage and sacrifice are the reason we can gather with our families, enjoy the sunshine, and live in peace.

Whether you’re grilling in the backyard, heading to a parade, or simply enjoying some well-deserved rest, I hope this weekend brings you joy, connection, and a chance to reflect on what truly matters.

Let’s never forget that behind the barbecues and long weekend is a powerful reminder: freedom isn’t free—and we are forever grateful to those who paid the price.

Wishing you a safe, sunny, and meaningful Memorial Day.

Your Voice. My Promise.

As we head into a special session, I know many of you are feeling frustrated—and I get it. This wasn’t how the session was supposed to end. But even now, I believe we have an opportunity to come together and finish the job the right way.

Through all the ups and downs, my commitment has never changed: to serve our district with integrity, to listen first, and to always put people before politics. I’ve had the chance to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle who care deeply about this state, and I believe that when we focus on what unites us—strong families, safe neighborhoods, and a government that lives within its means—we can accomplish great things.

Thank you for the trust you’ve placed in me. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly. I’ll keep showing up, speaking up, and doing the work—because you deserve nothing less.

Together, let’s keep pushing for a better, safer, and more hopeful Minnesota.

Sincerely,

Representative Jeff Witte
