Tuesday wasn’t just another hot summer day—it marked the kickoff of some fresh new Minnesota laws that could make a real difference for you, your family, and our communities. No parades, but definitely some wins worth celebrating!
Here’s a quick rundown of three standout laws now in effect as of July 1:
New Help for Homeowners’ Associations Time and time again, I’ve heard from Lakeville residents who feel stuck—unsure of their rights, unsure where to turn when disputes arise in their housing communities. That’s why I’m proud to support the new law establishing a common interest community ombudsperson within the Department of Commerce. This dedicated advocate will be there to help unit owners, tenants, and associations navigate issues, understand their rights, and find fair resolutions. I’ve seen just how much our community could benefit from this kind of support, and I’m truly excited to help bring this much-needed resource home to Lakeville.
Free Water at Large Events If you're heading to the fair, a concert, or any ticketed event with 100+ people, venues are now required to provide free water and allow you to bring in a sealed or empty water bottle. A commonsense change that keeps folks safe—especially during hot Minnesota summers.
Investing in Schools & Staff Minnesota is putting nearly $26 billion into K-12 education over the next two years. Plus, a new $100 million investment will help cover summer unemployment benefits for school support staff like paraprofessionals and bus drivers. It’s about time those who help keep our schools running year-round got the support they need.
Economic Development & Job Training From new grants for workforce training to expanded vocational rehab services, we’re making serious investments to get people back to work and support small businesses. It’s a good step forward for our local economy.
Public Safety Improvements New penalties for exposing kids to fentanyl, stronger tools for fighting wage theft, and better protections for firefighters and corrections staff are now law. We’re also starting the process of closing the Stillwater prison and investing in more effective community supervision and support.
Protecting Kids Online If minors are regularly featured in monetized social media content, new laws now ensure they’re fairly compensated and protected. It’s a modern-day child labor safeguard, plain and simple.
Bass Fishing Now Year-Round Fun Good news for all the anglers out there—bass season is now open year-round! Whether you’re casting a line in the heat of July or braving the cooler months, largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair game anytime. It’s a great way to enjoy Minnesota’s beautiful lakes and reel in some memories.
Watercraft Registration Fees Updated If you’re planning a boat day this summer, take note: watercraft registration fees have been adjusted to better support aquatic invasive species prevention and maintain public water access. Keeping our lakes healthy and accessible means more fun on the water for everyone!
Oh, and We Have a State Fossil Now Meet Castoroides Ohioensis—a giant, prehistoric beaver that now holds the title of Minnesota’s official state fossil. I didn’t see that one coming either—but hey, we love our wildlife.
These new laws reflect our commitment to protecting Minnesota’s natural treasures and making life smoother for families and communities alike. Wishing you a fantastic summer full of sunshine, good times, and maybe a big bass or two!
Happy Independence Day, Minnesota!
This week, Minnesotans—and Americans everywhere—will come together to celebrate the birth of our nation.
Independence Day isn’t just a time for fireworks, flags, and family cookouts (though those are certainly part of the fun). It’s a moment to remember the incredible courage and conviction of the men and women who stood up for liberty nearly 250 years ago—and the generations since who’ve fought to preserve it.
As we enjoy the freedom to gather, speak freely, and live our lives as we choose, let’s not forget the cost of that freedom—or the duty we share to protect it. From our service members and veterans to our law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders, thank you for your continued dedication to keeping our communities and our country strong.
May this holiday remind us that despite our differences, we are united by something far greater: a love for this nation and a belief in the promise of America.
Wishing you and your family a joyful, safe, and meaningful Fourth of July.
