Legislative Update 03.01.2024

Friday, March 1, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our virtual town hall meeting last week. A special shout-out also goes to our Vice President of the St. Paul City Council, Hwa Jeong Kim, for moderating the event with such expertise and grace. It was incredibly valuable to hear your thoughts, concerns, and ideas about natural resources/climate change efforts, gun violence prevention measures, access to affordable childcare, and more.

I know we weren't able to get to every question, and I apologize for that. However, please know that each and every one of your questions is important to me. I encourage you to follow up with my office directly so we can ensure your voice is heard. You can reach out by email at rep.leigh.finke@house.mn.gov or by phone at 651-296-3824.

The feedback I receive from you is crucial in shaping my work as your representative. Your participation in these town halls helps me stay informed about the issues that matter most to you and allows me to advocate for your needs.

 Equal Rights Amendment

As the Chair of the Minnesota Queer Legislators Caucus, it was an honor to join the Reproductive Freedom Caucus in announcing its 2024 legislative agenda. At the press conference, I delivered remarks on how Minnesota has the opportunity to cement the rights and protections of our LGBTQIA2+ community into our constitution under the Equal Rights Amendment.

We will continue to fight and amplify this message throughout session!!

Outfront Minnesota Lobby Day

It was an honor to be a speaker at OutFront Minnesota’s Lobby Day. I am proud of the work and services they provide to our vibrant community. OutFront Minnesota’s Lobby Day is about translating our passion into action. Let's demand legislation that truly protects our rights and freedoms. Minnesota is a trans refuge state, a beacon of hope, and that promise must be reflected in our laws.

WCCO Interview

Thank you to Esme Murphy for having me on WCCO to talk about gun violence prevention measures. Minnesotans want safer communities by enacting common-sense gun violence prevention laws to protect their families, communities, and schools from preventable violence. Laws like secure storage requirements and restrictions on high-capacity magazines protect both gun rights and innocent lives.

Your concerns about public safety at our recent virtual town hall were clear. I want to assure you that I will continue to champion our shared values and advocate for solutions that keep our community safe.

 Committee Assignments

As we return to the 2024 Legislative Session, I'm deeply honored to serve on the following committees again:

  • Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy
  • Human Services Policy
  • Judiciary Finance and Civil Law
  • Legacy Finance

I look forward to the robust discussions we'll have over this legislative session and continue making a positive impact on Minnesota families! You can learn more about each committee by visiting the Minnesota Legislature website.

Stay connected

Please continue to reach out with any input, ideas, or feedback about the issues important to you. I value hearing from you, so call or email any time. You can follow my new Facebook page or contact my office.

It’s an honor to represent our community in the Minnesota House.

Sincerely,

Leigh Finke
