Legislative Update - Universal School Meals

Friday, March 15, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

Session has been really busy as I work to best represent our community. As we begin to take votes on more and more bills I’d like to hear from you on your priorities, please take a couple of minutes to fill out my 2024 legislative survey. I look forward to hearing from you!

March is Women’s History Month! Last week I celebrated International Women’s Day with my 4 favorites!!

Here’s an update from the Capitol:

High Demand of Universal School Meals Prompts Legislation to Meet Need

Participation in the universal school meals program has surpassed the initially anticipated increase by more than 20% across the state. To ensure we’re meeting the need and filling this gap, House DFLers approved legislation to continue these investments so no child goes hungry at school.

MPR had a great story about the program that you can read here.

House Approves 101 Environmental Projects

Minnesotans take pride in our legacy of environmental stewardship. That’s why DFLers passed legislation to fund 101 projects across our state that protect our wildlife, water, air, and soil. The funding, which comes from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, uses a portion of our state lottery proceeds to ensure our environment and natural resources are protected for generations to come.

ENRTF

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources is now gathering input about the future of Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund spending and taking feedback about what environmental issues are most important to you. Make your voice heard about how to improve Minnesota's environment & natural resources. Take the survey here.

Debt Fairness Act

Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the country. That’s why DFLers have introduced the Debt Fairness Act. Too many people are saddled with unmanageable debt, and our current laws have been insufficient at addressing this dilemma. Medical debt depletes peoples’ rainy-day funds, causes them to incur credit card debt, and to forgo medical treatment altogether. The Debt Fairness Act aims to unburden Minnesotans from medical debt, and help working and middle class families make ends meet.
