Legislative Update – January 25, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

On January 3rd, I was officially sworn in as your new representative for District 42A—representing West Plymouth and a small portion of Maple Grove. Thank you so much for the opportunity to be your state representative; I am truly humbled by your support. I am happy to share that I have already been hard at work moving forward on the issues that matter to our district and all of Minnesota!

Tax Conformity

I am proud to say the House worked quickly to pass a bill updating Minnesota’s tax code into conformity with federal law–which has already been signed by the Governor! This will result in over $100 million in tax cuts to a wide range of Minnesotans while simplifying future tax filings. This efficient and unified action is just the beginning of an effective legislative session under House DFL leadership. By passing this bill within the first two weeks of the session, the Department of Revenue will be able to incorporate these measures in time for this year’s tax filing season. I was happy to vote in support and encouraged that the legislation passed unanimously!

Committee Assignments

I am excited to announce my committee assignments for the 2023-2024 legislative session. This session I will serve on the Capital Investment Committee, the Climate and Energy Finance and Policy Committee, the Health Finance and Policy Committee, and the Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee! These assignments will allow me to be an advocate for our district on many of the important issues I heard about again and again while knocking on doors in Plymouth and Maple Grove this past summer and fall.

With a DFL trifecta, we can invest in our own communities and get to work on important capital investment projects. We can work to rebuild our infrastructure in a way that is sustainable for future generations. We can expand access to quality, affordable healthcare. Finally, we can make sure our judicial system works better for everyone. I am so excited to get to work on these issues and more this legislative session!

Protecting Reproductive Options

Politics have no place in a doctor’s office, and elected officials should not interfere with a patient and their doctor. However, last year the U.S. Supreme Court unraveled a half-century of legal protections guaranteeing the right to an abortion. The Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act protects Minnesotans’ right to contraception, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, and the right to abortion, and ensures the right to privacy for personal reproductive health decisions. It also prevents interference by anti-choice politicians who seek to enact or defend medically unnecessary barriers to comprehensive reproductive health care.

Minnesotans overwhelmingly support the fundamental right of individuals to make their own healthcare decisions. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade sends a clear message that we can’t take these rights for granted. The PRO Act will codify these fundamental rights into law which is essential in guaranteeing reproductive freedom for the long term. We must act now to ensure a future state Supreme Court can’t take away the bodily autonomy of Minnesotans. I was proud to cast my vote in support of the PRO Act last Thursday evening!
