Rep. Warwas, House Republicans Release School Safety Agenda
Saint Paul, MN – House Republicans announced their school safety agenda yesterday, outlining proposals to protect students in the classroom, expand access to mental health care, and hold violent offenders accountable.
Rep. Cal Warwas highlighted the importance of the plan, saying: “Parents send their kids to school to learn, and should have a reasonable assurance that they are in a safe environment. This agenda takes meaningful steps to strengthen school security, ensure access to mental health care, and keep dangerous criminals off our streets - this is what every family in Minnesota deserves.”
Key provisions of the agenda include:
• Allowing schools more flexibility to use funding for safety improvements
• Expanding school safety funding to non-public schools
• Creating school security grants such as the SHIELD Act (HF 15)
• Making School Resource Officers available to every school
• Repealing or amending restrictions on doctors’ ability to use their best medical judgment
• Boosting funding for mental health treatment beds
• Establishing mandatory minimum sentences for repeat gun criminals
