Legislative Update: March 6, 2026
Hello Neighbors,
The last two weeks have been filled with many legislative firsts, including introducing my first bills (you can find a running list of all my bills here) and presenting my first bill in committee!
Beginning Committee Work
In the State Government committee, we heard my bill, which aligns benefit rights for legislative leaves of absence for state and local government employees.
It’s not a flashy bill, but I’m glad to be gaining experience about the legislative process that will help as I continue to introduce and present legislation this year.
In the Transportation Committee, we’ve heard several bills that would improve pedestrian and traffic safety. We heard proposals on speed limiters for habitual speeders, traffic cameras that have reduced speeding by over 50% in Minneapolis, and piloting a yellow alert system to better respond to hit-and-run incidents.
I’ve also proposed a bill requiring transponders for all aircraft flights, which will soon be heard in committee. This bill is a response to ICE’s refusal to use such transponders to hide their activity from the public, and it will ensure that Minnesotans know what federal agents are doing in our skies.
Taking Action on Gun Violence Prevention
As I leave the Capitol, I walk by 60 empty desks installed on the east lawn by the parents of children at Annunciation Catholic Church and School. Annunciation families came to the Capitol last week, calling for action after the devastating shooting that killed 10-year-old Harper and 8-year-old Fletcher, and injured dozens more last August.
House DFLers are proposing bills banning assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and binary triggers, requiring safe storage, and mandating the reporting of lost or stolen guns.
Governor Walz has included Republican priorities—like mental health support and school safety—in his gun violence prevention package, meaning my Republican colleagues can’t deflect the conversation away from guns like they usually do—we can do both.
With a tied House, all it takes is one Republican to join us and stand with the families of Annunciation and the nearly 70% of Minnesotans who are calling for action on guns.
Fletcher and Harper should still be in school today. Minnesotans are asking us to do something to prevent future gun deaths - it's up to Republicans to decide if they stand with the people or the gun lobby.
