Bill aims to clarify when government workers’ data would be public

Current state law says any data created when a person accesses a government computer or database is private and nonpublic.
HF1701, sponsored by Rep. Ilhan Omar (DFL-Mpls), would clarify an exception.
Data created when government employees or independent contractors access government computers or databases would instead be classified as public under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.
The House Civil Law and Data Practices Policy Committee held the bill over Thursday for possible inclusion in an omnibus bill. There is no Senate companion.
