Starting Line: Protecting press rights of student journalists

A high school or college newspaper is where many writers get their start. These publications help student journalists learn more about the profession and work toward a potential career. Freedom of speech and of the press is the law of the land, but sometimes there is a gray area for student journalists.

In some cases, schools have the authority to censor any material they deem not appropriate. This week on "Starting Line" we learn about a bill that aims to protect the rights of student journalists. Rep. Cheryl Youakim (DFL-Hopkins) sponsors HF1501 with the intent of supporting student journalist expression in school-sponsored media.
