House re-passes bill to help physicians practice in other states

The House repassed a bill Wednesday, as amended by the Senate, which is intended to make it easier for physicians to receive expedited licenses in some other states.

Following the 130-1 vote, HF474*/SF300, sponsored by Rep. Tony Albright (R-Prior Lake) and Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester), goes to Gov. Mark Dayton.

The bill would authorize the Board of Medical Practice to perform criminal background checks required for Minnesota physicians seeking licenses in other states in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.

Passed by the House 128-0 March 29, the Senate tweaked the bill before passing it 62-0 May 4.

This is intended to make it easier for physicians to practice in multiple states, while maintaining standards, Albright said.
