Legislative Update - Fighting for Constitutional Rights

Wednesday, March 11, 2026

Dear Neighbors,

We are in full swing at the Capitol, and my days are filled with committee work, bill presentations, and meetings with constituents. If you come to the Capitol for a “day on the hill,” please reach out to my assistant so that I can schedule a time to greet you.

Standing Up For Our Constitutional Rights

We are continuing to push legislation to hold ICE accountable for their unconstitutional actions and lay the groundwork for future protections. My bill to require the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct an independent investigation into deaths caused by federal agents was heard in committee. Unfortunately, no Republicans supported it. I continue to hear that we should tone down our “rhetoric” around ICE. Accurately describing the actions of ICE is not rhetoric, and neither are these important bills, it is standing up for the rights of all Minnesotans.

Making Life More Affordable

In the House, I’m working with my DFL colleagues to deliver on a package of bills designed to make day-to-day living more affordable. From housing, child care, health care, and more, we have a plan to bring costs down for you and your family. Corporations and billionaires have unfairly profited at our expense. I will work to reverse that trend by passing legislation that directly improves your quality of life by making sure we are on a more equal playing field.

Helping Minnesotans Afford Their Lives

Meanwhile, Trump has dragged us all into an immoral, illegal, and expensive war with Iran. We are facing immense domestic economic issues yet he would rather spend billions on a war no American asked for. Now gas prices are rising, putting a dent in your wallet.

Connecting with Community

In addition to meeting with groups and individuals that have visited the Capitol to advocate for various issues, my staff and I are in regular communication with constituents who reach out to the office for assistance. Recently we were able to help a family navigate getting services for their son with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Please do not ever hesitate to reach out if you need assistance; meaningful work does not always require a legislative change.

Recently my colleagues and I attended a bipartisan dinner with community members during Ramadan. This Iftar was a lovely time to break bread together and reflect on our shared humanity.

Preventing Gun Violence

In the Public Safety Committee, we heard bills that address many of the tragedies that have occurred in Minnesota since our last session. Advocating for a ban on weapons of war, the families from Annunciation shared the horrific trauma and loss that their community experienced in August and that continues. While all the Democrats on the committee voted in support of the bills to ban high-capacity magazines and the sale of military-style assault weapons, none of the Republicans supported these bills and they failed to advance out of committee.

When we first talked about passing a red flag law, the experts and advocates knew it would save lives if people knew about it and used it. Well now we are seeing more Minnesotans are using this life saving law than ever before. We know these bills will save lives and work. The majority of Minnesotans support the ban on high-capacity magazines and the sale of military-style assault weapons. If you have friends or family represented by Republican legislators, please ask them to reach out to their elected officials to support these life-saving bills.
