Legislative Update – Passing Bills, Protecting Minnesotans

Hello Friends,

Imagine you just bought a gift card for your kid's teacher, thanking them for all their great work, but then you find out that criminals stole the money as the card was activated while checking out. That’s happening now in Minnesota because our laws haven’t kept up, so I wrote a bill to fix it.

Yesterday, the House voted unanimously to pass my bill holding criminals accountable and tackling gift card fraud in Minnesota. Right now, the law only values the cost of the plastic, not the amount on the card.

My bill closes that gift card fraud loophole. It’s supported by DFLers, Republicans, and our law enforcement professionals, and I’m looking forward to getting it to the Governor’s desk to sign.

Protecting Minnesotans Online

Yesterday, I voted in favor of a bill authored by my colleague Rep. Jess Hanson banning AI ‘nudification’ features which can be used to make non-consensual explicit images, and victims out of everyday Minnesotans.

No one should have to worry that nude images of themselves can be generated by AI, without their permission, at the push of a button. Governments around the world have failed to react quickly enough to the dangers of AI. But yesterday, I joined my colleagues in taking action to protect Minnesotans online.

Supporting our Federal Workers

The partial federal government shutdown of DHS has been going on for 70 days. Since it started, I’ve been working on ways we here in Minnesota can support our TSA workers, while still helping hold the line on the demands for much-needed reform at ICE from the Metro Surge.

As I was driving into work this past week, I heard reporting that our federal workers who staff the TSA, right here at MSP Airport, may soon be left without paychecks,  struggling to pay the bills and make ends meet.

That’s why I’ve introduced a proposal to create a personal loan guarantee program to support affected employees of the TSA and other federal agencies during shutdowns.

This is a simple step we can take to support those federal workers who make our state safer, and who shouldn’t have to bear the economic consequences of the federal government’s illegal actions. I’ll continue having conversations with my colleagues about this bill, and other ways we can support Minnesota families.
