SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Rep. Samakab Hussein (DFL - Saint Paul) issued the following statement:
“Today at approximately 4:15 p.m., while I was serving in committee at the Minnesota State Capitol, multiple homes next to my residence in Saint Paul were struck by bullets during a drive-by shooting. Families were inside the homes at the time. Thankfully, no one was injured and my family is safe.
“I want to thank the Saint Paul Police Department and Ramsey County law enforcement for responding quickly and securing the scene.
“This incident is deeply alarming and a reminder that gun violence remains a serious threat to our communities.
“While I was serving the people of Minnesota in committee at the Capitol, bullets were striking homes next to mine — this is why we must act now to stop gun violence and pass stronger gun safety laws.
“I am calling on both Republicans and Democrats to come together and take meaningful action to protect our communities. DFLers have shown leadership by bringing forth numerous solutions to address gun violence, but every time they’ve been given the chance the GOP sides with the gun lobby instead of getting dangerous weapons off of our streets. Public safety should never be partisan, and our neighborhoods deserve peace and security.”
