Hello from the State Capitol,
The Minnesota House Transportation Policy and Finance Committee recently debated legislation that would bring Minnesota’s vehicle tab fees back to pre-2023 levels when Democrats who were in charge of the legislature at the time significantly raised them.
I sit on this committee and supported the plan. Though the value of our cars drops significantly with each passing year, Minnesota’s car tab fees do not keep pace. This is another bill that would help make life more affordable for Minnesotans.
In 2023, Governor Walz and a Democrat-led legislature changed the vehicle tab fee formula and effectively raised rates by 20%. Minnesota has much more expensive tab fees compared to its neighbors.
The legislation would drop the tax rate from 1.575% to 1.285% of MSRP on newer vehicles, and older vehicles would see a rate drop from 1.54% to 1.25% of MSRP.
Minnesotans are rightfully frustrated that car tab costs are unaffordable, which is why House Republicans are trying to help.
The bill stalled in committee on a 7-7 tie vote as I joined all Republicans in voting in favor of lowering vehicle tab costs, while all Democrats voted against it.
