Rep. Smith Statement on Passage of Bill Revoking MinnesotaCare from Undocumented Adults

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House passed a bill during its special session to revoke MinnesotaCare from undocumented adults. The bill maintains coverage for undocumented children, but bars new undocumented adults from signing up and will remove coverage from existing users on January 1.

Rep. Andy Smith (DFL – Rochester) released the following statement upon bill passage.

“Stripping away human rights from people isn’t fiscally responsible; it’s cruelty.

“Not only will this bill raise healthcare costs for Minnesotans – it is also woefully un-Christian, a brand that the GOP both brandishes and hides behind when doing wrong onto their own neighbors. I refuse to support a bill that takes away vital services not just from my constituents, but from so many across the entire state. This vote was a clear and simple decision between right and wrong, and it’s heartbreaking to see this wrong prevail.”

Video of today’s debate, including comments made by Rep. Smith, are available on the House Info YouTube page.
