Education: Stopping Proposed Special Education Cuts (HF 4114) I also want to highlight a priority I’ve been working on when it comes to education funding. In the Governor’s supplemental budget, there’s a proposal to cut roughly $300 million from special education starting in 2027. Cutting the resources that so many students, educators and families need is not the right approach. I’m working with colleagues to advance HF 4114, which removes that automatic cut and makes sure schools aren’t put in a position where they’re expected to absorb major funding losses down the road. I am also chief authoring HF 57, a bipartisan bill, to expanding funding for special education learners. There’s no question reform is needed in special education funding, and that work will continue. But it should be done carefully and deliberately, not by putting cuts in place now and hoping the details get figured out later.
