Legislative Update

We are entering the final month of the legislative session, and bills are continuing to move off the House floor each week. Thank you to everyone who has stayed engaged throughout the process and taken the time to share your feedback, whether by reaching out, attending town halls, or participating in my weekly surveys. Here’s a quick update on what we’ve been working on this week at the Capitol.

Local School Leaders

It was great to connect with local school leaders this week. Thank you to representatives from Wayzata and Minnetonka for stopping by, and to Westonka Superintendent Kevin Borg and Orono Superintendent Kristine Gleischer for a productive conversation. We spent time discussing end-of-session priorities, including concerns around the Governor’s proposed cuts to special education, which total roughly $300 million. These are real dollars that schools rely on, and I’ll continue pushing to make sure districts have the support they need.

Bills on the Move

We continue to move legislation through the House as deadlines approach. This week included a number of bills focused on public safety, accountability, and local government flexibility. I’ve supported efforts that prioritize responsible spending, strengthen oversight, and address the concerns I hear most often from residents across our communities.

School Safety

Over the past several months, the Suburban Solutions Caucus has been working closely with families impacted by the tragedy at Annunciation. Those conversations have shaped a number of ideas aimed at improving both school safety and community safety more broadly.

One proposal we are working on would require social media companies to report credible threats of violence to state and local law enforcement. Time and again, we’ve seen warning signs appear online before incidents occur. Making sure that information gets into the hands of those who can act on it is a step toward preventing future tragedies.

Supporting First Responders

This week also included several opportunities to meet with and support our local first responders. I appreciated the chance to connect with the new fire chief in Mound and leadership from the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department.

Thank you to the men and women serving in Orono, Long Lake, St. Bonifacius, Minnetrista, Deephaven, and Minnetonka. The work you do every day matters. We are continuing efforts at the Capitol to support recruitment and retention, while making sure departments have the tools and resources they need to keep our communities safe.

Supporting Outdoor Recreation and Clean Water

I authored legislation to create a specialized license plate that would fund the Keep It Clean Initiative, helping protect our waters from Lake Minnetonka to the Boundary Waters. The proposal also supports snowmobile clubs by investing in trail development, bridge improvements, and expanding access to the outdoors. This is a practical way to strengthen Minnesota’s outdoor economy while protecting the natural resources that make our state unique!
