Legislative Update: April 23, 2026

Dear neighbors,

First off, I want to thank everyone who was able to make it to our District 64 Legislative Town Hall last weekend and thank Mayor Her for joining us to give an update on city issues. It was my first official town hall, and I’m so glad we have such a politically engaged district that will show up to hear about the work going on at the Capitol.

If you couldn’t make it, or if you have a question about an issue facing the legislature this year, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office (rep.meg.luger-nikolai@house.mn.gov) and we will get back to you as soon as we can!

Legislative Session Update

We are one month away from the end of the 2026 Legislative Session, and negotiations are continuing as we work to pass our priorities to build an economy, health care system, education system, and state that works for everyone.

Unfortunately, Republicans are showing Minnesotans that they’re more interested in political theater, not policy solutions. They tried to make a motion to adjourn almost two months early and legislators have been caught skipping committee to day-drink. Just last week, Republicans spent time appeasing the “freedom caucus,” who are more interested in social media clips about impeaching Gov. Walz and Attorney General Ellison than doing literally anything to lower prices for families.

In just my first couple of months as your representative, I'm getting a pretty stark lesson in how the GOP uses divided government to stall progress on the issues our district cares about: economic relief, gun violence prevention, ICE response, and more.

But the fight isn’t over. I’m continuing to push for these priorities, as well as looking for places I can get my Republican colleagues’ support. I hope as we head into these last couple of weeks, we can get serious and make progress together. Our neighbors deserve better.

Funding to Combat Medicaid Fraud

Last week, the House GOP voted against funding to strengthen the integral Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The proposal would beef up one of the most effective Medicaid fraud-fighting forces in the country. That means more fraudsters in jail and more public funds going where they need to.

There is a 3-to-1 match of federal funds for any state funds appropriated for MFCU staff. As a result, the state would only need to pay for 4.5 staff to get a total of 18! It is fiscally irresponsible to throw this opportunity away, and it’s another example of Republicans letting politics get in the way of progress.

Minnesotans want us to take strong action to prevent fraud and protect our public programs, and I couldn’t agree more. It's time to cut out the political games and pass some real legislation that will have a real positive impact. There are still potential paths for this critical legislation to move forward, and I’ll support it every step of the way.

This Saturday: Free Parks Day!

On Saturday, April 25th, it’s Free Parks and Trails Day in Minnesota. Four times a year, Minnesota state parks offer free entrance, waiving the need for a $7 vehicle permit. It’s a great way to revisit our local gems or explore a new part of the state. You can use the parkfinder here to plan your next trip.
