Hello, Neighbors, On July 1st, many new laws from the 2026 legislative session took effect, including my bill to increase penalties when a victim of theft is a vulnerable adult. You can find a list of the new laws and summaries here. For the past two years, the Minnesota House had equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans for only the second time in state history, making it impossible to pass legislation without Republican support. While the Trump administration violates the US Constitution and attacks Minnesotans, all elected officials should be working to support the rule of law and protect our residents. But House Republicans refused to even acknowledge what Minnesotans are facing. They consistently rejected proposals to reduce the damage of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill on Minnesota families and protect our kids from gun violence. As co-chair of the Judiciary and Civil Law Committee, I fought to protect the civil rights of Minnesotans blatantly violated by the Trump regime while Republicans refused to see what was right in front of them: a violent and illegal occupation with no respect for our constitutional rights. The frustration of missed opportunity was a recurring theme during this year’s legislative session. For most working Americans our economy is broken. To fix it, our policies must benefit all people, not just the richest one percent. Our system works when everyone gets a fair shot, everyone gives their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules. Next session I will continue to fight to give Minnesotans a legal remedy when their constitutional rights are violated, bring down state healthcare costs and increase accountability by removing insurance companies from our public programs, reduce the influence of big money in our elections, and help Minnesotans afford their lives. Absent the Republican blockade, we can do it. The legislature is out of session until January 2027, and this is the final newsletter you’ll receive from me until then. Minnesota law requires that certain official communications halt 60 days after legislative adjournment in election years to not give an unfair advantage to incumbents, and I support this.
