RELEASE: REP. SCOTT, REP. WHELAN TO HOLD PROPERTY TAX TOWN HALL MEETING IN ANOKA

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

ST. PAUL – Last year, Minnesota House Property Tax and Local Government Finance Committee Chairman Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, and Rep. Abigail Whelan, R-Anoka, held a property tax listening session to hear from residents concerned about rising property taxes.

On Friday, February 26, Rep. Drazkowski and Rep. Whelan, along with Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, will hold another town meeting to explain what was accomplished last session on the property tax relief front, and to gather feedback from area residents.

The meeting will be held at the Anoka City Hall, 2015 First Ave. N., Anoka, MN 55303, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

"Last year we had a lively discussion about how legislators can assist our area regarding property tax relief," Whelan said. "We hope to learn more about what residents feel is most important to them regarding this topic."

Last session the Minnesota House approved omnibus taxes legislation that would have eliminated the statewide business property tax for small business owners, cut school district construction levy burdens on farmers in half, and provided over $2 billion in tax relief to hardworking Minnesotans. That bill awaits full legislative action during the 2016 session, and is expected to be at the top of the priority list for legislators.

“We passed a fantastic tax bill last year, but need citizens' input on how to make this bill even better for the upcoming session,” said Scott. “Most of our property taxes are decided at the local level, but the state can play a role in providing relief.”
