Legislative Update (April 21, 2017)

Friday, April 21, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a great Easter, and are looking forward to a BEAUTIFUL spring weekend. We started a new phase of the legislative session, and I want to ensure you’re up to date.

Conference Committees Begin

This week, we started the process of ironing out the differences between the House and Senate budget bills. We formed conference committees with five members from each body coming together to find common ground. I was fortunate to be named to the judiciary and public safety conference committee. I’m looking forward to working with House and Senate members from both parties to create a bill that can be signed into law.

Data Practices Forum

I also participated in a forum related to the Data Practices Act. The goal was to educate the public on their rights to government information. It’s important to know what information the government keeps on citizens, as well as how to access it. If you have questions about this topic, please contact me so we can discuss it.

Anti-Terror Bill

This week, the House passed a bill to ensure a person can’t take out a life insurance policy, then commit and act of terrorism, and their family is awarded the insurance claim. If a person is planning to die in a terrorist act, there’s no reason they should be able to collect life insurance. This is a good, bipartisan bill, and I hope it continues through the process and becomes law.

Distracted Driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This is such an important topic to keep our drivers and pedestrians safe. It’s important to know that texting while driving is illegal. It’s also against the law for drivers under 18 to use their cell phone if they’re driving. Be sure to be safe! Don’t eat, text, look down to change the music, or anything that could put you or someone else at risk. For more information about staying safe behind the wheel, please click here to read the Coon Rapids Police Department's monthly newsletter.
