Legislative Update (September 22, 2017)

Friday, September 22, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Now that school is back, it’s time to start thinking about one of my favorite parts of the legislative session: our high school page program. This is a weeklong experience for high school juniors to come to the Capitol, interact with lawmakers, participate in committee, and help members and staff conduct daily business. It’s a really great opportunity for anyone interested in politics or government.

More information about the program can be found here. Applications are due December 1, so be sure to start early!

Committee Hearing

This week, the Data Practices Commission held a hearing to discuss student privacy and online security. We heard an overview of state and federal laws that are in place. Along with this, we received information on Rep. Eric Lucero’s bill on the subject to better spell out what can and cannot be done with a student’s online data produced on school-issued devices. If you ever have any questions about student privacy or data, please contact me.

Traveling Meetings

Recently, the Child Support Taskforce held the first of four public hearings that will be held around the state. We heard from 17 Minnesotans on the challenges they are facing with the current child support and family court systems. What we’re seeing is the system is broken and causing children and families great harm in far too many cases. We’ll hear more at our other three meetings, and look for solutions as we head toward the 2018 session.

Local Event

Tomorrow, Coon Rapids is hosting a “Love My Pet Fair” where you can enjoy pet costumes, demonstrations, and even a parade. This is a great, free event for kids! Here’s a link with more information.

Please Contact Me

As always, please feel free to call or email if you have a question or idea. I’d love to hear from you.

Enjoy the warm weekend,

Peggy
