Legislative Update (March 24, 2016)

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Greetings,

The legislative session is moving at a quickened pace as the first committee deadline – April 1 – approaches. This deadline is important, as most bills must have had at least one committee hearing in order to move forward in the legislative process. I’ve appreciated hearing from many of you, and hope you’ll continue to contact me throughout session.

Affordable Child Care

You might remember from earlier this month, I joined other St. Cloud-area legislators and the Minnesota House Select Committee on Affordable Child Care for a listening session in Waite Park. During the meeting, daycare providers shared the obstacles and barriers they face every day, and that information is essential as we reexamine the relationship between the state and local business owners who provide this critical service to families.

We’ve learned there is increased need for qualified daycare providers, but there are a decreasing number of providers. A very concerning matter is the shortage of infant providers. Going forward, I plan to support a number of bills to assist both families and child care workers.

Meeting Constituents

This was another busy week of meeting neighbors from our area. Rep. Jeff Howe of Rockville and Senator Michelle Fischbach of Paynesville joined me to chat with students from the St. Cloud Area Learning Center. We learned firsthand about the positive impact the Area Learning Center has had on them both personally and academically – what powerful stories!

Representatives from Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District stopped by this week. As you know, our area is home to wonderful natural resources. I enjoyed listening to their ideas, and discussing ways to help Stearns County.

The Stearns Electric Association also visited my office in St. Paul. They’ve served our area since 1937; providing energy to over 25,000 residents throughout Stearns County. If you and your organization are interested in meeting, feel free to contact my office and schedule an appointment.

Happy Easter

I hope you and your family will have a great Easter!

Enjoy your weekend,

Tim
