Legislative Update 1-18-19

Friday, January 18, 2019

Greetings,

This week, good progress was made on an elections bill I’m sponsoring that would modernize, secure, and update our statewide voter registration system and for cybersecurity upgrades.

The legislation allows the use of available federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funding to be utilized with a five percent state match in order to begin making the improvements.

We had a very positive discussion about the bill in both the Subcommittee on Elections and the Government Operations Committee this week.

The bill was approved by members in both committees and is continuing down its path towards a full vote in the Minnesota House.

KSTP-TV also interviewed me on this topic, to watch the story click here. The StarTribune’s coverage is here.

HEALTH CARE DISCUSSIONS BEGIN

Health care discussions have also begun at the Capitol. As this was one of the top issues of the campaign season last year, it’s good to see that various ideas are coming forward on health care reform. Over the last two years, legislation approved by the legislative Republican majority led to significant price decreases on the individual health insurance market. Hopefully we will continue to build on those successes.

IT’S YOUR MONEY – CLAIM IT!

Each year, the Department of Commerce receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property from businesses and organizations that have lost contact with the owners, and it is responsible for safeguarding the funds or property until claimed by the rightful owners or heirs. PLEASE VISIT WHEN YOU’RE IN ST. PAUL!

I also met with a number of constituents in St. Paul this week. If you’re planning to make a trip to St. Paul, please stop in to visit. Appointments can be made by calling 651-296-7808.
