Legislative Update
Friends,
We are back in session, and things are moving quickly at the Capitol. The House remains evenly split again this year, which means there will be tough debates, competing priorities, and plenty of challenges ahead. That said, this isn’t new territory. We worked through a tied House last year, and I expect we can continue finding ways to move good policy forward when we stay focused on practical solutions and real results.
We started the week by honoring Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman and recognizing her years of service to Minnesota. It was an important moment to reflect before getting back to the work ahead.
Building on Permitting Reform Progress
As GOP Chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee, improving Minnesota’s environmental permitting process remains a key priority for me. Last session, we made real progress by passing reforms that improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary delays while maintaining strong environmental protections.
Governor Walz’s recent executive order directing agencies to streamline permitting timelines builds on that work. A more predictable permitting system helps responsible projects move forward, supports local economies, and ensures Minnesota remains competitive while protecting the natural resources that define our state.
Focus for the Session Ahead
As we move forward, my work will continue to focus on practical priorities that matter to families and communities:
Make Minnesota Affordable
Costs remain high for families, small businesses, and local governments. We need policies that reduce financial pressure and make Minnesota a more affordable place to live and work.
Stop the Fraud
Minnesotans are tired of seeing taxpayer dollars lost to fraud and abuse. Strengthening oversight and accountability remains a top priority and we plan to deliver just that by establishing a robust Office of Inspector General with the important distinction of having enforcement capability - that means unlike the Democrat proposal, our OIG will NOT be a hollowed-out office.
Raise Standards, Reduce Mandates
Excessive mandates drive up costs and limit local decision-making. We can maintain strong standards while giving communities the flexibility they need.
Minnesota Tax Dollars for Minnesotans
State spending should reflect responsible stewardship and prioritize Minnesota residents.
Make Minnesota Safe
Public safety remains foundational to strong communities, and we must support policies that keep families and neighborhoods safe and flourishing. We can make improvements without reinventing the wheel. Enforce existing laws, keep criminals off the streets, and deter crimes like retail theft, auto theft, and property crimes that destroy quality of life.
Make Minnesota Competitive
If Minnesota wants to grow and keep opportunities here, we must improve our business climate and reduce barriers to success.
Looking Ahead
The session is just getting started, but the direction we take now matters. I remain focused on practical solutions that protect our resources, strengthen our economy, and deliver real results for the people I represent.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
