RELEASE: Rep. Fue Lee Statement on St. Cloud Refugee Moratorium Initiative

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today a Minnesota Public Radio story outlined efforts by a St. Cloud City Council member to place a moratorium on relocating refugees in that central Minnesota community.

First term State Rep. Fue Lee (DFL – Minneapolis) is a refugee from Thailand and has visited many immigrant-owned businesses in the St. Cloud community. Rep. Lee issued the following statement:

“Our state has always been, and needs to be, a welcoming place for immigrants, refugees and their families. St. Cloud is no different, and has a long history of welcoming immigrants seeking a better life for their families. I’ve had excellent experiences visiting the Somali-owned businesses that are contributing to the economic and cultural vitality of St. Cloud. Attacks on this community echo an alarming national trend toward crude white nationalism that ignores our past as a cultural melting pot, and exposes latent strains of white supremacy that endanger our American values and threaten our democracy. I join both Democrats and Republicans, like St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis, to empower people of all nations, religions, colors, and genders to call America home and succeed here. Refugees contribute, shape and continue to strengthen our state and nation and they are one of the greatest things about America.”

Rep. Lee encourages constituents to contact him with any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas on any legislative topic. Rep. Lee can be reached by phone at 651-296-4262 or by email at rep.fue.lee@house.mn .
