RELEASE: Rep. John Poston Votes to Allow Wedding Venues to Operate at Full Capacity

Thursday, January 28, 2021

ST. PAUL —State Representative John Poston, R-Lake Shore, voted in support of an amendment offered during debate today in the Minnesota House of Representatives to allow wedding venues to operate at full capacity.

“The current restrictions Governor Walz has placed on wedding venues demonstrate the arbitrary nature and double standards of his one-size-fits-all shutdowns,” said Rep. Poston. “There is no reason why wedding venues should be subjected to severe restrictions while restaurants and bars can open at 50% capacity. Wedding venues are often large and provide ample space for social distancing. Regulating weddings not only causes frustration for families, it effectively destroys an entire ecosystem of businesses dependent on the wedding industry like photographers bridal shops, hotels, DJs, florists, caterings companies, and more.”

Indoor wedding venues are limited to 10 people or 2 households if food is served, while restaurants and bars can operate at up to 50 percent capacity and indoor events are open at 25% capacity for up to 150 attendees.

The amendment was voted down by Democrats due to technical objections.
