REP. WEST AUTHORS BILL TO ELIMINATE TAXES ON ALL SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME

Friday, February 8, 2019

Hello from St. Paul,

Did you know that Minnesota is only one of a handful of states that taxes senior citizens on their Social Security benefits?

One big highlight of last session’s tax relief law is the portion dealing with Social Security tax relief. Because of this provision, nearly 284,000 senior citizen tax filers received tax reductions, and 72,000 of those no longer pay state income tax on their Social Security benefits.

With Minnesota facing a $1.5 billion surplus, I believe it’s time to address giving all senior citizens permanent relief. That’s why I’m authoring a bill that would eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits for ALL senior citizens.

When I was visiting with residents last fall, I heard repeatedly that senior citizens should keep more of their Social Security. They paid into the program over the years, and they should get their money back without the state taking a cut.  I believe there’s no reason to continue punishing them by taxing their Social Security benefits.

As this bill moves forward in the House committee process, I’ll be sure to keep you updated about its status.
