I was so busy in meetings that I didn’t have time to get it done. The first part of this week has also been crazy! We had a long floor session yesterday and Tuesday was filled with Tax and Fraud Prevention Committee work. I’ll do a quick 10-day update now and hope to get back in sync on Friday! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful first green of spring! This is one of my favorite times of the year – everything is so bright and hopeful! I look forward to warmer days, but am enjoying the beautiful drive to work every day – spring is popping all around! ?? Executive Summary- WHAT DID CONGRESSWOMAN OMAR KNOW ABOUT FEEDING OUR FUTURE?

WHAT DID CONGRESSWOMAN OMAR KNOW ABOUT FEEDING OUR FUTURE?Last week, the House Fraud Prevention and State Oversight Policy Committee dug into the Feeding Our Future scandal and, unfortunately, we still have more questions than answers. Most Minnesotans are unaware that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar played a major role in creating Feeding Our Future, which turned about to be the biggest COVID scam in the country. Back in March 2020, during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rep. Omar authored a bill called the Meals Act, which was inserted into a larger federal coronavirus response bill. This eliminated all of the guardrails from the school nutrition program, enabling restaurants to become child nutrition sites, removing income eligibility criteria and changing the attendance requirements. This weakening of internal controls allowed her friends from establishments like the Safari restaurant to start billing for meals that were supposed to go to needy children. She literally was on the Somali TV, promoting Safari Restaurant as one of the meal sites and her role in passing the Meals Act. The owners of Safari restaurant have since been convicted of fraud in the Feeding our Future scandal. We think it is important that Rep. Omar answer the Committee’s questions about her involvement in creating the conditions for fraud and her involvement with many of the fraudsters – many of whom had donated to her campaign. She later returned or donated those contributions to charity. It is clear from court trial exhibits that her staff was also communicating with fraudsters. Minnesotans deserve to know if she was encouraging them to take advantage of the program and whether her role was intentional or inadvertent. Unfortunately, she did not show up our fraud hearing. I sent a follow-up letter after the hearing, requesting answers and documents by May 5, 2026. You can read it here. Stay tuned. WHY IS ATTORNEY GENERAL ELLISON AVOIDING FEEDING OUR FUTURE QUESTIONS?We also had many questions to ask Attorney General Keith Ellison, particularly regarding his actions as the lawyer for the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) when they were sued by Feeding our Future. AG Ellison also skipped the hearing, saying he doesn’t have jurisdiction to prosecute these cases. While it is true he only has original prosecutorial jurisdiction in Medicaid cases, he ALSO is the attorney for state agencies and was deeply involved in defending MDE when they were sued for allegedly not processing Feeding our Future’s site applications fast enough. AG Ellison also oversees all charities in the state and played a role in dissolving several that were involved in the federal nutrition scam – but he never brought civil charges in those cases. We wanted to ask him why he let them dissolve without sanctions and what happened to their assets when they were allowed to dissolve. I sent a follow-up letter and have asked for his responses by May 5, 2026, as well. Stay tuned. LATEST DFL TAX: SOCIAL MEDIA TAXThe Minnesota House Taxes Committee has been working overtime the last two weeks, hearing numerous bills that deal with local option sales taxes and tax increment financing districts. We also discussed the governor’s tax proposal, which includes a new tax on social media companies based on the number of Minnesota consumers they serve. Although I’m no fan of the social media companies and how their algorithms are targeting and harming our kids, I do not think the state should gain value from citizens’ data. Instead, individuals should have control of their data and decide if and when they want to sell it to different social media platforms. The value of data should accrue to individuals who choose to sell it, not to the state. Our data is increasingly valuable and citizens, not government, should control the value.
