Statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy and House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson on Trump's Insurrection Act Threat

Thursday, January 15, 2026

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) and House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson (DFL - Anoka), released the following statement today on Trump threatening to institute the Insurrection Act this morning on Truth Social.

 House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson:

“There is no insurrection in Minnesota.  Our highly-trained, professional Minnesota law enforcement officers are perfectly capable of keeping the peace. This is in strong contrast to ICE agents, who have at every turn - and across the state - escalated situations towards violence.

“The problem is not Minnesotans - the problem is the poorly trained, unaccountable, masked federal agents who are harming them.

“It is laughable that Trump would claim concern over an insurrection, when he is the man who pardoned the violent rioters who actually committed an insurrection on Jan. 6.

“People in Minnesota are strong. We’re not scared, and we’re not taking the bait. Trump wants us panicked. He wants us to put ourselves in harm’s way. We’re not - regardless of what Trump tweets come next.”

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy:

"Donald Trump is inflicting the power of the federal government on the people of Minnesota, the people he is elected to serve. Our children, our families, our neighbors, and our businesses are bearing the brunt of his campaign.

“Renee Good was shot in the face, in the light of day, and last night another Minnesotan was shot by federal agents who should never have been sent here. In response, federal officials are manufacturing false narratives,  covering up the investigation, and escalating the numbers and actions of ICE agents in our state.

"We are less safe now. In response to the escalation, Minnesotans are acting, in peaceful protest and peaceful action.  We are delivering food, protecting our children as they go to school, protecting the faithful as they worship, and recording the actions of agents in pursuit of the truth and for the lives of our neighbors.

"I am deeply concerned about Donald Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act. The federal government is trampling human, civil, and constitutional rights. They are threatening our people with the power of the federal purse. Minnesotans aren’t having it. For peace and safety, it is time for ICE to leave Minnesota.”
