Legislative Update - May 6, 2019

Dear Neighbors,
 
Over the weekend, Mounds View High School students raised over $17,000 for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. I’m inspired by what these students are doing to turn tragedy into hope.

There are just two weeks remaining in the legislative session. The Minnesota House has wrapped up our work assembling our proposals for each area of the state budget. Now, joint House/Senate conference committees are charged with determining differences in each chamber’s version of the budget and ultimately, reaching a compromise. Here’s an update on a couple of the final topics we worked on.
 

Judiciary/Public Safety
Serving as Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee has been a rewarding experience as we work to remove barriers many Minnesotans face as they seek justice. Our budget fully funds our courts, ensuring we can have an independent, autonomous judiciary. We’ve also increased funding for court cybersecurity, reforms to our probation system, and funding for additional corrections officers to improve safety in our prisons.
 
For my part, I’ve worked extremely diligently to strengthen protections against sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence. My legislation to help prevent sexual harassment, which previously was approved by the House in a standalone bill, is included in our budget, as is the creation of a working group to develop a new criminal sexual conduct code. Here’s a video of my address on the House floor about the work we’ve accomplished in this area.

 

Higher Education
It’s the time of the year where our seniors are getting ready for graduation and making plans for their futures.

All Minnesotans deserve to go to college or a career training program without experiencing piles of debt. Unfortunately, Minnesota has some of the highest average student debt loads in the country.
 
To address this, the House Higher Education budget freezes tuition for the next two years at our public colleges and universities along with new investments in the Minnesota State Grant Program. The budget also prioritizes access to mental health services and legal advocacy support for sexual assault survivors. To address growing food insecurity among students, the budget includes a “hunger-free campus” initiative.
