Rep. Kotyza-Witthuhn statement following Hopkins daycare tragedy

Wednesday, August 12, 2026

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (DFL – Eden Prairie), co-chair of the Minnesota House Children and Families Committee, issued the following statement regarding this morning’s tragedy at a Hopkins daycare, which led to the deaths of a child and both parents:

“My heart goes out to those grieving the loss of loved ones and everyone impacted by this morning’s horrific act of violence. This incident is extremely difficult to comprehend for adults and kids alike. All Minnesotans deserve to feel safe in their daily lives, especially in trusted spaces where children are being cared for. The trauma the other children present experienced is simply unthinkable, and I’m grateful for the response from law enforcement to safely reunite all of them with their families. I’m hopeful the community will give the children, parents, and first responders the support they need in this extraordinarily difficult time.”

For those experiencing domestic violence, help is available from Day One Services by calling 1-866-223-1111 or texting 612-399-9995. Violence Free Minnesota has additional resources available at www.vfmn.org/get-help.
