Legislative Update - Our Housing Budget & Other Proposals

Friday, April 21, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

We had a historic week in the Minnesota House, continuing our work to implement a vision for a brighter and stronger future for Minnesota.

Specifically, we approved our Higher Education, Legacy, Environment and Clean Energy, Veterans, Elections, State and Local Government, K-12 Education, Agriculture, Transportation, and Early Childhood budget bills.

I also had the honor of presenting our Housing Budget bill, representing the strongest commitment to addressing our housing crisis in state history. Every day, more Minnesota families are feeling the squeeze from the higher cost of housing, escalating rents, and a shortage of homes to rent or to own.

Our historic investment in housing says to Minnesotans that we hear you and are ready to go big so that more Minnesotans can afford their home. There is no place like a safe and stable home, and we are opening that door to tens of thousands of Minnesotans, laying the foundation for Minnesota families to succeed and thrive.

You can watch my closing comments on the House Floor before we passed our bill here.

Our K-12 Education Budget

At the center of our House DFL budget is the belief that no matter your zip code, every child deserves an opportunity to succeed. This week, we voted on HISTORIC investments (in amounts that begin with a B) in public education to make good on this value and vision.

Our K-12 Education budget does the following:

State of the State

This week, we took a brief pause in the House Chamber so that our Senate colleagues and guests could join together for Governor Walz’s State of the State Address. Governor Walz laid out a bold vision for Minnesota’s future - one that strengthens our state not by standing still, but through decisive action.

Extremely proud to work with the Governor and my colleagues in the legislature to deliver on the needs of Minnesotans this year, and we’ll have some historic accomplishment crossing the finish line soon. Stay tuned.

In partnership,

Michael Howard
