Dear Neighbors,

I hope your summer is off to a great start! After a particularly brutal winter, we all deserve to enjoy a beautiful and warm Minnesota summer. We’re a month out from the end of the 2026 Legislative Session, but with some of the policies and investments still being enacted, what we managed to accomplish this year remains in the spotlight. Shining brightly is the $40 million we secured for emergency rental assistance.

Recently, I spoke to the New York Times about the inspiring Minnesotans that sprung to action to help their neighbors stay in their homes amidst the federal assault of our neighborhoods. Not only did they directly keep thousands of Minnesotans safe at home, but they helped push the legislature to deliver this emergency rental assistance, highlighting our ongoing need to address our housing crisis.

NYT Article

This summer, we were hoping our state-level actions to address our housing needs would be partnered with congressional actions as well - something that we normally aren’t depending on with this Republican-led congress, but bipartisan progress was being made with the federal 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which would reinvigorate the fight against the nationwide housing crisis.

Despite the exceedingly rare act of bipartisan collaboration, President Trump announced that he would refuse to sign the housing bill until Congress passes his authoritarian elections bill, which would disenfranchise millions of voters.

Instead of signing a bipartisan, generational housing bill that will build scores of homes and lower housing costs, President Trump is holding it hostage as part of his ongoing crusade to disenfranchise millions of voters.

The President is making it crystal clear: he couldn’t care less about the rising costs that are pushing so many Americans to the brink. This Republican-led Congress has done nothing to make the lives of regular Americans more affordable, but let’s give credit where credit is due. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is a bipartisan achievement that will build scores of new homes, reduce costs, and create more opportunities for families to buy a home they can afford.

It is beyond mystifying that our President would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by refusing to sign this bill. This should be a no-brainer — sign the bill and make housing more affordable for American families.

Congratulations Ava!

I’ll sign off with some uplifting news. If you haven’t followed the story of Richfield’s Ava Wiederholt, you should!

Ava joined thousands of athletes from all over the nation at the 2026 Special Olympics Games, which took place in Minneapolis over the weekend. Just the journey to compete would be enough to make her community and state proud, but Ava went so far as to win several medals in the gymnastics competition! That’s four golds for the all-around, vault, floor, and uneven bars, and silver in the balance beam!

Congratulations Ava! Thank you for showing how hard work and perseverance pays off, and for giving your community something to rally around!

We’re so incredibly proud of you and all the athletes that challenged themselves at this year’s games.

In solidarity,

Michael Howard
