Release: Rep. Bierman cheers ISD 196’s nomination of Teacher of the Year

Monday, January 30, 2023

Saint Paul, Minn. –  Alissa Standon, a middle school communications teacher at Rosemount Middle School in Independent School District 196, has been nominated to become Minnesota’s 59th Teacher of the Year. Statewide, 131 educators are also eligible. Representative Robert Bierman (DFL-Apple Valley) has previously served on House Education committees, and cheered Ms. Standon’s nomination.

“Our students in ISD 196 deserve a world class education, and teachers make that possible as they guide the next generation to success for our state and economy,” said Rep. Bierman. “We’re working hard at the legislature to make sure educators like Ms. Standon have the resources available to deliver that level of excellence and effectiveness to all of our students. Congrats, Ms. Standon, and thanks for all you do!”

The program celebrates the tradition of excellence in teaching in Minnesota. Eligible candidates include pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade, Early Childhood Family Education and Adult Basic Education teachers.

An independent panel of leaders in the fields of education, business, government, nonprofit and philanthropy will read candidates’ portfolios over the next few weeks and narrow the list to a group of semifinalists. In March, the panel will convene again and review additional materials from the semifinalists to choose a group of finalists. The Minnesota Teacher of the Year banquet is set for May 7th at the Saint Paul RiverCentre.
