Legislative Update- February 26, 2019

Tuesday, February 26, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re staying warm. If you’re concerned about ice dams, the Minnesota Department of Commerce offers tips for how to deal with them now and how to prevent them in the future, which can also save you money on your heating bills. You can find this information about steps to take related to air sealing and ventilation here.

Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Governor Walz releases state budget plan

Last week, Governor Walz on Tuesday released his proposal for a new two-year state budget, which he calls a “Budget for One Minnesota.” It prioritizes education, health care, and economic prosperity. You can read more about the state budget plan here.

I’m still reviewing the components within the Governor’s budget blueprint and what they mean for our community. We’ll be able to hone in on specific priorities after the February state budget ‘forecast’ will give us a clearer picture of our state’s economic situation.

Committee hearings outside of the Capitol

Minnesotans expect their legislators to be accessible and meet with them in their own communities, which is why the House Majority is holding a variety of official “field hearings” outside of the Capitol to allow more Minnesotans to participate in the law-making process and shape what their state government looks like.

Last Friday, the Education Finance Committee traveled to Windom, Minnesota to learn more about local education challenges and successes. Our committee held a public hearing in the auditorium and we discussed my bill, HF 1143, which would increase the operating referendum equalization aid, designed to help districts on the per-pupil levy.

The quality of our schools should not depend on the zip code you live in. All children deserve a world-class education and I’m committed to ensuring District 196 has the tools to deliver that level of quality.

Honoring our Fallen Soldiers & First Responders

After losing my brother in combat while serving in Vietnam, I remember how special it was to have a soldier present a flag to my family on behalf of the President of the United States, and the citizens of our great nation.

Currently, family members of the fallen soldiers in Minnesota must request the Minnesota or American flag that is flown over the Capitol. My bill would deliver the flag to eligible family members of soldiers and first responders killed in the line of duty, free of charge.

These men and women serving are always making sure we are safe. This is one small way we can show gratitude for their service.

The bill awaits a committee hearing in the House.

Constituent Visits

I had the opportunity to meet with the Minnesota Organization of Leaders in Nursing recently. They are doing amazing, selfless work providing quality care to patients across the state. Thank you for taking the time out of the day to come to the Capitol.
