Legislative Update-November 22, 2019

Rep. Huot

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re having a great week. I had the honor of sharing remarks yesterday at the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) Solidarity event at the Capitol. MAPE members work hard to deliver excellent services to Minnesotans so they can thrive in their communities. My parents taught my siblings and me to value public service, so it meant a lot to speak with these hardworking state employees who do so much to ensure our state is running smoothly.

Public Works Tour

The House Capital Investment Committee concluded its statewide tour last week, visiting several sites across the state and 54 counties with proposed public infrastructure improvements. Throughout the statewide regional tour, committee members learned about local communities’ infrastructure needs firsthand, including our own.

Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland joined us and advocated for a Red Line skybridge to improve access and increase public safety for public transit users. The Minnesota Zoo shared their vision of connecting Minnesotans of all ages and abilities to nature with their proposed Treetop Trail. I was excited to chief-author the public works legislation for this project last session and will continue to back the bill in 2020.

I also showed the committee the proposed Rosemount portion of the Mississippi River Regional Trail. Currently, the north and southeast segments in Dakota County are open for use. There is a key section in Rosemount, however, where there is no trail due to an unsafe and inaccessible railroad and industrial area. My proposed legislation would fund the section of the trail that is currently nonexistent, so that all ages and abilities can enjoy scenic views of the river, connections to local parks and trails, and other community destinations.
