MN Zoo Update & New Laws

Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday, Governor Walz authorized the release of $6 million to the Minnesota Zoo from the COVID-19 Minnesota Fund, which was created by the Minnesota Legislature to maintain state government operations throughout the duration of the peacetime emergency. The Fund was put into place for situations like these, and I’m grateful the House and Senate found common ground on prioritizing its passage during session. New Laws Take Effect Today

Several new laws go into effect today, including the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act, which is named after Alec Smith, a 26-year old man who tragically died because he was forced to ration his insulin. The new law will help ensure people with diabetes can access the insulin they need to live in an emergency situation, and to create a long-term path to access affordable insulin. Nobody should ever die because they can’t afford the medicine they need to survive. You can read more about the new law and others here.

Fall Planning Survey from the MN Department of Education

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) wants to hear from families about their distance learning experience as they plan for the 2020-21 school year. Families can share their experience by taking this Fall Planning Survey. What school will look like in the fall will largely be determined by the direction set by the Minnesota Department of Education. I encourage you to take part and share your feedback with state leaders. The survey deadline has been extended to July 6, 2020.

MDE will announce their decision about the 2020-21 school year the week of July 27, 2020. 

AARP Survey

The Governor’s Council on an Age Friendly Minnesota, is working to drive coordinated action across state agencies and move Minnesota toward being a more livable, age friendly state. The full community survey can be taken by individual Minnesota residents, age 45+ through July 3, 2020.
