Release: Under new proposal, notaries public could perform civil marriages

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

ST. PAUL – Representative John Huot (DFL- Rosemount) yesterday introduced legislation that would authorize notaries public to perform civil marriages.

“The ongoing pandemic had made it difficult for couples to plan their nuptials, including finding someone who can or is willing to officiate their wedding,” said Rep. Huot. “This bill expands options of eligible officiants, aiming to make the process a little easier for Minnesotans planning to wed in the era of COVID-19.”

Under the legislation, the notary public must be authorized by the Minnesota Secretary of State and have credentials filed with a local registrar of a county within the state.

The bill awaits a committee hearing in the House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee.
