I want to say thank you to everyone who came out to our listening session on Saturday! It was a great chance to hear about your priorities and how I can better serve you. Legislation
While the percentage of students of color continues to increase, Minnesota has a persistent shortage of teachers of color and Indigenous teachers (TOCAIT). Only 4.2 percent of all teachers in Minnesota are teachers of color. We know that this contributes to achievement and opportunity gaps. The teachers who are with our kids, and our neighbors’ kids, every day should reflect the diversity of our state. That’s why I introduced a bill to provide scholarships to qualified teachers of color with financial needs.
Affordable housing is the key to making Minneapolis a vibrant, growing city and yet, we still face a severe shortage of affordable housing. I introduced two pieces of legislation that will support renters in our city. H.F. 407 would provide funding for Minneapolis public housing renovation, and H.F. 495 would require landlords to provide written leases for their tenants. This will prevent tenants from being subject to unfair rent hikes and unexpected eviction notices.
Last week I had the opportunity to sit in on a hearing about opioids in Minnesota’s Native Communities. It was a sobering reminder that the opioid crisis continues to cause tragedies throughout the communities in our state. I am committed to working with legislators to find a solution. Too many Minnesotans’ lives have been touched by the harmful effects of this epidemic, and many are struggling with the high costs of health care as a result. We need more funding for overdose prevention, and we need to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable as we work to end this epidemic.
