Legislative Update - March 28, 2019

Thursday, March 28, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

The Minnesota House DFL announced a framework for the Minnesota Values Budget this week, prioritizing education, affordable healthcare, housing, and safe, inclusive communities to build a Minnesota that works better for everyone. This budget reflects the values of our state and our people, and will improve our lives.

The Associated Press has a story about the announcement here, or you can watch a full video replay here.

 Making Prescription Drugs More Affordable
Nearly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. struggle to afford their prescription drugs, forcing people to make painful choices. According to a recent report, 30 percent of Minnesotans reported that they have not taken their medicine as prescribed, have reported skipping doses, cutting pills in half, substituting with over-the-counter drugs, or not filling a prescription in the past year because the cost was simply too high.

I support House DFLers’ comprehensive plan to make prescription drugs more affordable by holding pharmaceutical companies accountable and putting more power in the hands of Minnesotans who are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of medications. Our comprehensive plan is among the strongest efforts to address the rising cost of prescription drugs in the country. It increases transparency for drug manufacturers, improves public scrutiny of pharmaceutical middle men, leverages the State of Minnesota’s purchasing power to cut health care costs, and puts more power back in the hands patients and their doctors.

I hope Senate Republicans will join us in supporting these bills. They should not be partisan.

Paid Family and Medical Leave
The Family Medical Leave Act would allow Minnesota workers to take time to care for a sick family member or a new baby, while still retaining a percentage of their salary. The bill has been through a lot of committee stops - it received a hearing on Tuesday, and has upcoming hearings on Friday and Monday. Minnesotans shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table and caring for themselves or their loved ones. The House is committed to providing economic security for hard-working families.

Constituent Shout-Out
I got the chance this week to welcome students from Marcy Open Elementary School to the Capitol. Our children deserve a world-class education so that, no matter their background, they can go on to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.

Thank you for keeping up with what’s happening at the Capitol, and have a great week!

Sincerely,

Mohamud Noor
