Legislative Update - April 18, 2019

Thursday, April 18, 2019

Neighbors,

Today marks my first 100 days in office - each and every one of my days here I’ve fought for our community’s affordable housing, infrastructure, accessibility and equality, as I will continue to do in the last month of session.

Reflecting on what we’ve accomplished so far:

Education

We laid out an education budget which invests in teachers of color, language accessibility, closing opportunity gaps, funding early childhood education, and ending teacher layoffs. It will freeze tuition for two years for all Minnesota’s universities, AND we proposed to pay for all of this by closing corporate tax loopholes that allow corporations to get out of paying the taxes that could be helping our future workforce, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

I strongly support education for our children. House DFLers believe that all of our children deserve a world-class education, no matter where they live in our state. That’s why we’re investing in every student in every public school. This is about our children and our state’s future, and it is our children who will benefit.

Infrastructure

My bill to build a pedestrian and bike bridge over Interstate Highway 94, connecting Cedar-Riverside and Seward neighborhoods on 22nd Ave., got included in the Public Works budget. After we break next week we will come back to finalize our budget bills, and I will continue to fight to make sure we get the investment for this project to connect our community in a safe, reliable way.

Safer Roads

After many years of advocacy and debate at the Capitol, we finally passed a bill to increase drivers’ safety by requiring Minnesotans to put down their phones and focus on the road.

Renter Protections

The Minnesota House passed my bill to increase transparency for renters and even the playing field between tenants and landlords. The bipartisan bill would increase renter protections and amend requirements to ensure greater lease transparency.

Students, low-income individuals, and immigrants are disproportionately impacted by housing policies that are designed to favor landlords over renters. Stable housing is fundamental to living a productive, affordable life. This consumer protection measure will bring much-needed transparency to the housing market.

Environment and Natural Resources

The Environment and Natural Resources Committee approved a budget which will protect our land, water and air. Included in the budget is a set of major energy policy proposals that will lead Minnesota to 100 percent clean energy in the state’s electricity sector by 2050. The policies build on the success that Minnesota has already achieved in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the use of clean energy resources to power the state while ensuring reliable, affordable electricity.

Health Care

The Health and Human Services Committee announced a proposal to lower the cost of health care, address the rising cost of prescription drug prices, increase the quality of coverage, and give patients and their doctors more power over their care.

I'm proud of what we've worked on, and what we've accomplished. I couldn't have asked for a better 100 days serving you and our community. Please let me know if there are ways in which I can better bring our needs and priorities to the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Mohamud Noor
