Honoring Melissa & Mark Hortman

Thursday, June 26, 2025

Dear neighbors

On the morning of Saturday, June 14, we woke up to news that shattered our hearts. Melissa Hortman—a remarkable leader, a close friend, and someone I deeply admired—was killed alongside her loving husband Mark in their home. Their golden retriever, Gilbert, was also taken from this world. That same morning, Senator John Hoffman—someone I hold close and care for deeply—along with his wife Yvette and daughter Hope, were violently attacked in their home by the same suspect. These actions of political violence have shaken us deeply.

I’m struggling to put into words how heartbroken I am. Melissa was more than a political leader- she was my guide, my inspiration, and someone who led with quiet strength and unwavering determination. Her courage, her brilliance, and her deep care for others shaped everything she did. She never chased the spotlight—she chased results that made life better for the people of Minnesota.

Melissa served in the Minnesota House for over 20 years, including six years as Speaker. She was deeply passionate about her state, her community, and—most of all—her family. She guided us through some of the most challenging and defining moments in our state’s history—from the COVID-19 pandemic to the profound pain and urgent call for justice following the murder of George Floyd. Melissa fought tirelessly for justice, invested in people, and worked toward a better future. Yet, she never sought credit for herself. Instead, she lifted others up, created space for leadership, and encouraged those around her with humility and grace.

It’s hard to imagine our work without her. Her absence leaves a silence that echoes.

Memorial Information:

The pain of this loss is deep and far-reaching. Everyone who knew Melissa and Mark is grieving, but this tragedy extends beyond personal sorrow. It is a profound loss for all who believe in the value of public service and the strength of our democracy. In the midst of unimaginable grief, their children, Sophie and Colin, offered heartfelt guidance on how we can honor the memory of their parents:

  • Plant a tree
  • Visit a local park and enjoy its amenities (especially bike trails)
  • Pet a dog (golden retrievers preferred, but any dog will do)
  • Share a cheesy dad joke and laugh
  • Bake something—bread for Mark or cake for Melissa—and share it
  • Try a new hobby and enjoy learning
  • Stand up for justice and peace

As we grieve, let’s also hold John, Yvette, and Hope Hoffman close in our hearts and wish them a full recovery.

Melissa’s legacy is one of love, care, and fierce commitment to Minnesota. Let’s carry her spirit forward by living with kindness, courage, and dedication to one another.

With a heavy heart,

Rep. Mohamud Noor
